If you want to plan a seasonal science experiment for young children, I highly suggest trying these sink or float experiments shared by Theresa from Capri + 3.  She uses three different corn (popped popcorn, dried, and fresh) and two different kinds of water (regular tap water and carbonated water) and has her kids experiment to see if the different kinds of corn will sink or float in each kind of water.

Counting Down to Halloween
As September draws to an end, are your kids getting anxious for Halloween? It can seem like an awful long wait from October 1st to October 31st, but this fun countdown project might help. At the very least, when they ask you “how many days left until Halloween” you can simply tell them to count to looks on their witch.

Provide paper, scissors, google eyes, and glue or tape and let the kids create their own witch face. They should then cut 30 strips to use to make paper chains that you can attach to the witch so it looks like hair. The kids can then take off one loop each day to count down the days until Halloween.

Visit this tutorial and learn how to make your own countdown witch.

When Crystal’s daughter’s saw some Aqua Sand at the store, she decided they would go home and try to make their own. Crystal likes to make her own versions of pretty much any art and play material she sees in stores. Not only is it fun for the family, it is a great money saver!

She bought some colored sand and some Scotch Guard fabric protector and started experimenting. Since the fabric protector repels water, she figured it was the perfect way to make the sand waterproof — and she was right!

When Allison’s daughter asked her if they could make a scarecrow, she said yes and then set about to find a variety of supplies they could use. She wanted to use materials that provided her daughter a variety of different textures to explore. They started out with a paper plate to use for the scarecrow’s head and then used felt, paper, buttons, yarn, and corrugated cardboard to create all of the face details. Talk about adorable!

Check out this simple project that was created by a mom at Mosswood Connections to help her son work on fine motor skills — specifically, cutting. She noticed his cutting usually seemed jagged and messy so she tried to think of a project that would be fun for him and also let him practice using a pair of scissors.

All that is needed to make rainbow wall spaghetti is colored paper, scissors, tape, and a wall. Draw a spiral on a piece of paper, starting on the outside and working your way in. Let your child cut it on the drawn line and then tape it to the wall.

Visit the Rainbow Spaghetti Wall tutorial to find out how to do it and read about more that can be done with this project.

Owl Craft Using Recycled Jar Lids
This project has made me double my efforts at saving trash for my crafts, although I suppose these would normally go in the recycling bin. I have done plenty of crafts using clean, empty jars but rarely do I make something out of the lid. These owls are just too cute, I couldn’t resist sharing them. All you need to make one, besides the jar lid, is paint. Of course, you also need a paint brush and Amanda shows you how to make perfect eyes using round sponge applicators. It is easy enough for all ages.

Follow Amanda’s tutorial and you can make your own Owls Using Recycled Jar Lids.

I love recycling crafts so this project really caught my eye. Amanda helped her kids create works of art using little more than pages of newspaper, cardboard, paint, and glitter glue sticks. Her daughter created the adorable owl picture that I shared here and her son created a picture of a recycling truck. Mounted onto cardboard, these pictures made wonderful wall hangings for the kid’s rooms.  You could also use Amanda’s technique with pages from old books, sheet music, and maybe even phone books!?!

Pumpkin Spice Latte Play Dough
If you love the smell of pumpkin pie, you will definitely want to make a batch of this play dough for your kids. The kids will have fun with this activity and, as an added bonus, the house will smell festive! You probably have everything you need to make this play dough in your kitchen cupboards right now (if you don’t have the pumpkin pie spice, you can get a similar smell from nutmeg). Once the kids are done playing with the dough, you can roll them into ball, top them with a piece of chenille stem, and set them on a shelf to dry.

ABC Fun - A is for Apple
A is for Apple and it is also for Autumn… Coincidence? I think not because autumn is the perfect time to teach about apples, and learning about both are a great way to start an alphabet unit!

Bern, from Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas, must have thought this was true because she created this torn paper apple craft for those reasons.  All that is needed for this project is construction paper and a pair of scissors. You use the scissors to cut out the letter, leaf, and seeds, but you actually have the kids tear pieces of red and brown paper for the apple and stem. Not only will they have fun tearing the paper, they will also be working on fine motor skills.

Follow along with this A is for Apple tutorial to make your own.

Instead of refrigerator art, make magnets that are refrigerator art in and of themselves!

Start out by printing the downloadable 2-page file of block letters shared by Lisa from Cucicucicoo. After the kids color in the letters as they please, they get passed through a laminating machine with a magnet cartridge, and finally cut out. This is great fun for the entire family to make together and everyone will love using their own letters to spell things out on the fridge.
