After writing the last post, I roamed around the Mother Huddle site and found a pumpkin seed craft!! I always wonder what the heck I should do with all of those leftover pumpkin seeds!! There are always way to many to cook up and eat. Great idea to craft with them!!

So when you are carving your pumpkin, save your seeds and create some art!!

Haunted House

I love art pojects that are based on picture book illustrations. This one from Journey into Unschooling is based on the illustrations by Kazuno Kohar in Ghosts in the House. Using plain orange and black construction paper and an exacto knife (mom and dad or the teacher do that part!!) they created a haunted house craft project. I love the vellum ghosts!!

Canon (as in the printer) has put together some incredible paper crafts just in time for Halloween. Just print off the pages and assemble with the instructions given. There are decorations, gift boxes, and masks. Very cool!!

Virtual Halloween Parade

Scarecrow Felt Board Game

This is a cheap and easy way to have some fun with younger children from Let’s Explore. Simply create pieces for a scarecrow (hat, clothes, head, etc) out of felt and let the kids put the scarecrow together. For more fun, create a simple spinner and have children put the piece of clothing or scarecrow body part on according to what the spinner lands on. Whoever finishes their scarecrow first wins!

Fall Activities

I am loving this idea by My Sweet and Simple Life Basically, you make a paper tree with fall leaves that each contain a fun fall activity to do that day on the flip side. Every day, your child chooses the leaf with the coordinating date of the month and you complete that activity together! She even gives some suggestions for ideas!! Fabulous!

Spaghetti and Meatball Hat Craft

This is another great activity to do while reading the book Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Kids of any age can make a spaghetti and meatball hat with just some glue, a paper plate, and yarn. With some creativity, it could be made into a cool Halloween costume!!

Where the Wild Things Are Paper Toys

Check out these awesome Max and a Wild Thing paper toys from Toy-A-Day. Just in time for the movie, you can print out the characters, Moishe (apparently one of the Wild Thing’s names) and Max (on a different link). Great for a quick art project with a class!!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Lapbook

I’ve loved lapbooks for a long time, but mainly I’ve seen them for younger children. Learning letters, shapes, sequencing, etc. So I was excited to find printable pages for a lapbook designed with older students in mind for the picture book Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett from Homeschool Share.

This lapbook includes pages about weather, compound words, compare and contrast, recycling and more!! A great resource for classroom teachers and homeschooling parents.

Reader Submission: First Day of School

I love getting submissions from readers who find fabulous ideas all over the internet! As I was going through my emails this afternoon, I realized that there were a couple of reader submissions that I’d neglected to post-and these links are great!!

This one is a little late for the first day of school (since it is the end of September) but would also be a fun tradition on birthdays or at the beginning of each calendar year. Roots and Wings gives the idea of having each child write what he or she wants to be when they grow up on a chalkboard and take a picture with it on the first day of each school year. What a fun thing way to remember how interests change and grow.
