Back-to-school time is kind of inevitably linked with apples, whether there be apple gifts for the teacher, apple crafts or apple experiments.
This experiment about apples browning from Teach Beside Me is super simple to set up. Grab her free printable, an apple and some containers, as well as some substances that can be used on the apple to see if they affect the rate of browning (such as water, oil, vinegar, etc.).
This is a great one for letting kids make guesses as to what might help keep the apple from browning, as well as to observe how different substances might cause the apple to brown at different rates. Then you can explain why acid is helpful to keep the apple its normal color. (If you don’t know the answer, she has a good explanation on her site.)
Have you ever done experiments with apples? I’d love to hear about them!
