My daughter is 10 and she still loves decorating masks. She made a mask to go with her Halloween costume last year and she loves decorating plain Mardi Gras masks with feathers, beads, sticker and other fun stuff.
Where Imagination Grows has a great activity for mask making for younger kids using construction paper (posterboard would also be a great choice) for the base, which is then decorated with paint, stickers, feathers or whatever you have on hand.
You could also use foam for the mask if you have some handy, though it will not take paint. Or use purchased masks if you have them.
If you did the bead cutting activity I shared the other day, those bead would be great to add to a mask, though you might need hot glue to do it.
