Winter is a time when we notice evergreen trees a bit more, even beyond the ones inside our homes. It’s a great time to learn about the different kinds of trees and to study the differences in their leaves and bark.
The Educator’s Spin on it has an overview of how to study evergreen trees, including going on a nature walk, collecting and observing specimens. You can also look at different trees in books if it’s too cold or snowy to go outside.
I like the idea, too, of checking your favorite winter children’s books for pictures or drawings of trees to see how they are presented and how they compare to the real specimens you gathered.
Add on drawing, doing rubbings with or painting with the leaves and you’ll have a whole afternoon of evergreen fun.
