When my daughter was in first grade, her class made their own dictionaries as they learned sight words. I guess a spelling dictionary is a more accurate term, because they didn’t include definitions, just the words so they could easily access the correct spelling of those words they were learning.
The Measured Mom has printable versions of a spelling dictionary you can download to use with kids of different ages. You can choose from pages without any words, with words and wide lines or words and narrow lines, with or without pictures at the top.
Start with a book with no words for littles to collect their own words (and make up spellings for different words). Older kids can use the listed words as a starting point and practice writing words on the lines or collect additional words.
Have you used spelling dictionaries with kids? I’d love to hear about it.
