8 Fun Fall Leaf Math Activities

October 4, 2014 by Sherri Osborn Leave a Comment

Fall leaf math activities are such a lovely way to sneak a little learning into all that autumn excitement. Once the leaves start changing colour, children naturally want to collect them, sort them, crunch through them, and bring half the backyard inside — so we may as well put those leafy treasures to good use before they end up scattered across the kitchen floor.

These fall leaf math activities are perfect for teachers, homeschoolers, parents, and caregivers looking for hands-on autumn learning ideas that feel playful rather than worksheet-heavy. Leaves are brilliant for early math because they can be sorted by colour, size, shape, and texture, counted into groups, used for simple addition and subtraction, arranged into patterns, measured, graphed, and compared. It is a wonderful way to turn a nature walk into a seasonal math lesson without children even realising they are practising important skills.

I especially love leaf activities for preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary learners because they make abstract math concepts feel real. A child who might lose interest in numbers on a page often becomes completely engaged when they are counting red maple leaves, making leaf patterns, or deciding which pile has “more” and which has “less.” Add a basket, a few paper bags, or a clipboard, and suddenly you have a simple fall math station that feels like an adventure.

This roundup of 8 fun fall leaf math activities is full of easy, low-prep ideas for autumn classrooms, homeschool lessons, outdoor learning, and seasonal play at home. Whether you are teaching counting, sorting, graphing, measurement, number recognition, or patterning, these fall leaf activities are a simple and cheerful way to bring hands-on math learning into the season.

Kids, and adults alike, always seem to be fascinated by the colorful leaves that fall from the trees during the fall. I think you can easily use that fascination to create fun fall leaf math activities the kids will enjoy. It is always fun to find new and exciting ways to teach the kids!

Easy Pen and Paper Games for Road Trips and Beyond

When my daughter was younger I would spend a lot of time trying to come up with activities she could do in the car on long road trips and things to entertain her when we were waiting at restaurants and things that didn’t involve screens.

But it turns out there are a lot of great activities you can do with just a piece of paper and a pen.

What Do We Do All Day has a great collection of pen and paper games, including some that can be done with just one person, though they’re all more fun if you have at least two.

There are some classics on here like hangman and dots and boxes, but there are also quite a few I hadn’t heard of before.

I don’t want to spoil the whole list for you because you should definitely click over there and look around, but I will share about the one that you see pictured above.

This game is called Bridges, and you start by making the big random shape and the dividing it into a bunch of sections (the post says 30-50 sections is ideal but I think this one is smaller than that).

Each player gets their own color marker and you take turns drawing bridges from one space to another, crossing a third. Once there’s a bridge, no other bridges can start, end or cross in those spaces. Keep going until no more bridges can be built, and the person who makes the last bridge wins.

Check out the post over at What We Do All Day for more great ideas for no or almost-no prep games you can play with your kids or that kids can play together. I’d love to know if you have a favorite paper and pen game, whether it’s on this list or a different one.
