Celebrating Holi with Kids

March 14, 2024 by Sarah White Leave a Comment

Holi is an important Indian festival that celebrates spring as well as the triumph of good over evil. It’s a very colorful holiday and even involves throwing colored powder around, so you can be sure this is one kids of any background will love to learn more about. Here are some fun activities to do at home or in a classroom to celebrate Holi.

Because it’s a celebration that’s all about color (and water) it’s a great time to bring out all your fun colorful play activities, from using liquid watercolors in spray guns to making neon colored chalk paint (or just playing with sidewalk chalk), colored rice or pasta and doing all the color sorting activities you want.

Virtual Book Club for Kids has a great collection of Holi related videos and a week of crafts and activities. The holi sugar cookies from Love Laugh Mirch are so pretty, and easy to make, too.

Urban Indian Mom has a great collection of craft ideas for Holi include painting by blowing through a straw and lots of other ways to make messy and colorful art.

Twinkl has some Holi vocabulary cards you can use to teach kids the basics, including things like pichkari, rangoli, dancers and spring. (A free account is required to download.)

Speaking of pichkari, which is basically a rocket-shaped water gun, you can make a decorative pichkari with these instructions from The Joy of Sharing.

Rangoli is more of a Diwali thing, but if you want to throw that in here, too, you can find some fun options at Get Coloring Pages. Or grab some color-by-number Holi coloring pages from The Playful Indian.

If you’re giving gifts for Holi, make some DIY Holi gift tags like the ones from Artsy Craftsy Mom. Just print out the tags and have kids decorate them as colorfully as possible.

Wondering how to remove holi colors from your face? Here are my go to tips.

Removing Holi colors from your face requires gentle yet effective methods to avoid skin irritation or damage. Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Avoid Rubbing: Do not vigorously rub your skin to remove the color as it can lead to skin irritation or redness. Instead, opt for gentle methods.
  2. Use Oil: Apply a generous amount of oil, such as coconut oil, olive oil, or baby oil, all over your face. Gently massage the oil into your skin, focusing on areas with color stains. The oil helps break down the color pigments and makes it easier to remove them from your skin.
  3. Use Cleanser: After massaging the oil, wash your face with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Choose a cleanser suitable for your skin type to avoid drying out your skin.
  4. Exfoliate (Optional): If the color stains are stubborn, you can use a gentle exfoliating scrub to further remove them. However, be cautious not to scrub too hard, as it may irritate your skin.
  5. Moisturize: After cleansing, pat your skin dry with a soft towel and follow up with a moisturizer to replenish any lost moisture and soothe your skin.

How to remove Holi color from your hair? use coconut oil and shampoo 2-3 times.
