Fourth Of July Roundup

June 19, 2013 by Shellie Wilson 2 Comments

The Fourth of July is the perfect excuse to pull out the red, white, and blue craft supplies and turn a regular summer day into something a little more festive. Whether you are planning a backyard barbecue, setting up a classroom activity, organizing a summer camp craft session, or simply looking for a few creative ways to keep the kids busy before the fireworks begin, a handmade patriotic project can add so much fun to the celebration.

This Fourth of July roundup brings together a cheerful mix of Independence Day crafts, edible treats, party decorations, printables, handmade accessories, and kid-friendly activities from across CraftGossip. It is designed to give you plenty of ideas in one easy place, whether you want something quick and simple for younger children or a more decorative project for older kids, teens, or adults.

You will find classic red, white, and blue inspiration such as patriotic sweets, mason jar luminaries, candle holders, printable drink flags, cross stitch designs, jewelry projects, bunting, wreaths, fruit pops, and outdoor games. Some ideas are perfect for decorating your home or party table, while others are great for classrooms, homeschool lessons, Scout groups, neighborhood gatherings, or family craft afternoons.

What I love most about Fourth of July crafting is that it does not need to be complicated to feel special. A few stars, stripes, ribbons, beads, paper scraps, jars, fabric pieces, or colorful treats can instantly create that festive summer feeling. Kids can help make decorations, adults can add handmade touches to the party setup, and everyone gets to enjoy a holiday that feels a little more personal and creative.

So whether you are celebrating with a picnic, parade, fireworks night, family barbecue, classroom party, or quiet craft day at home, these Fourth of July craft ideas and patriotic DIY projects will help you add color, creativity, and handmade charm to your Independence Day plans.

Easy Pen and Paper Games for Road Trips and Beyond

When my daughter was younger I would spend a lot of time trying to come up with activities she could do in the car on long road trips and things to entertain her when we were waiting at restaurants and things that didn’t involve screens.

But it turns out there are a lot of great activities you can do with just a piece of paper and a pen.

What Do We Do All Day has a great collection of pen and paper games, including some that can be done with just one person, though they’re all more fun if you have at least two.

There are some classics on here like hangman and dots and boxes, but there are also quite a few I hadn’t heard of before.

I don’t want to spoil the whole list for you because you should definitely click over there and look around, but I will share about the one that you see pictured above.

This game is called Bridges, and you start by making the big random shape and the dividing it into a bunch of sections (the post says 30-50 sections is ideal but I think this one is smaller than that).

Each player gets their own color marker and you take turns drawing bridges from one space to another, crossing a third. Once there’s a bridge, no other bridges can start, end or cross in those spaces. Keep going until no more bridges can be built, and the person who makes the last bridge wins.

Check out the post over at What We Do All Day for more great ideas for no or almost-no prep games you can play with your kids or that kids can play together. I’d love to know if you have a favorite paper and pen game, whether it’s on this list or a different one.
