I like to color with my friends. We can relax and talk and create beautiful pictures.

  16. Willa West-lake says

    September 25, 2015 at 7:48 pm

I would like to try using it in multiply ways. I would love to do this with my child in the evening to relax and visit together.

I think I would love to view the prints more carefully because they are so detailed. I am a teacher and I wonder if there is a way to teach patterns and some math or science terms with them while teaching. They might be a fun way to introduce animal reports or the cover page.

Also I go with my 78 year old mother to the senior hall occasionally to play games. They do coloring contests. These books I believe would be great for older people also because of the details. As the brain ages it is important to work it by reading, puzzles…etc. It helps memory. These books with the extreme detail would be good for that like a coloring puzzle. I think they look so delightful , I would have to tell and show my friends and work friends about them. I think they may have similar interests and uses.

  31. Margaret Szlabonyi says

    September 25, 2015 at 9:45 pm

I always love to color! It’s been one of my favorite activities since I was a child. Christmas ALWAYS included a Christmas coloring book which would last until January. Then it was onto a new one. Maybe Snow White….maybe Sleeping Beauty. Perhaps Winnie the Pooh! It didn’t matter. As long as I had a coloring book and CRAYOLA crayons, life was always good! Today, as an adult, I still love to color. But now, I may use colored pencils or markers, for a different look. Coloring takes your mind on a creative journey! My favorite places to color are my living room in front of the fireplace, and during Christmas, in front of the tree. Summertime, I like to spread a nice blanket out under my favorite tree. Life is good whenever you’re coloring!

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for about a year now, and some of the hormones I have been taking have been an emotional roller coaster. I love crafting but, at times, I feel too tired or bummed to get out all of the supplies. So, now I have a couple coloring books and my colored pencils on the end table next to the sofa. Sometimes I color while watching TV and other times I color in total silence. The beauty of it is that I feel I am being creative and productive, and I’m also not sitting and worrying constantly. It has been a major

Book Review: The No-Brainer Brain Explainer

Human brains are pretty amazing, allowing us to think, feel, create, communicate, move and more. But humans aren’t the only animals with cool brains, as Crab Museum explains in the book The No-Brainer Brain Explainer (illustrated by Bruno Valasse).

This book, aimed at kids in grades 1-4, is colorful and silly but also educational about how brains actually work, with billions of neurons sending electrical and chemical signals around the body.

“Everything we think, feel and experience comes from an electrical relay race, with neurons passing chemical batons to each other,” the book says. “The constant chatter of billions of brain cells creates your entire world.”

The book compares the brains of mammals to those of crabs (the book is “written” by a crab after all) and notes that crabs have fewer neurons and of course are much smaller, but they have separate parts of their brains that control their eyes and their legs. Crabs are also capable of remembering things, using tools and solving puzzles.

Some animals’ brains allow them to know more about their world in different ways from humans, such as spiders being sensitive to vibrations in their webs and catfish having an amazing sense of taste, with taste sensors all over their bodies.

It notes that 95 percent of brain activity goes toward things we do unconsciously, like breathing, walking and catching a ball flying toward us. It also talks about dreams, memory, how our emotions try to predict the future, where brains came from and fun facts about brains. For example, did you know a sperm whale is believed to have the biggest brain of any creature that’s even lived? Their brains weigh 18 pounds, compared to just 2.5 pounds for humans.

Information on what creatures have the smallest brains, the toughest brains, the most brains and those who actually eat their own brains will delight kids (and maybe gross them out a little bit). They’ll also enjoy learning about the mycelium network of fungi, which is like a brain without a body, and slime molds, which are like a brain without a brain.

It ends talking about why human brains are so special because we’ve found ways to work together, communicate and build communities on a scale bigger than any other animal.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy this colorful, silly and informational book about brains!

About the book: 64 pages, hardcover. Published 2026 by Wide Eyed Editions. Suggested retail price $19.99.
