  12. Debbie Chouinard says

I color by myself while waiting in doctor’s offices or other places. I color with the preschoolers at my job. Trying to instill the love of coloring in as many children as I can.

I color at the kitchen table sitting with my mother. I am her caregiver (she is 88, blind and has dementia). Coloring allows me to mentally get away for a much needed break but still be there for her.

I usually color in my comfy chair in the evenings – it’s a great way to relax before going to bed.

  15. Theresa Conte says

    September 25, 2015 at 7:43 pm

I like to color with my friends. We can relax and talk and create beautiful pictures.

  16. Willa West-lake says

    September 25, 2015 at 7:48 pm

I would like to try using it in multiply ways. I would love to do this with my child in the evening to relax and visit together.

I think I would love to view the prints more carefully because they are so detailed. I am a teacher and I wonder if there is a way to teach patterns and some math or science terms with them while teaching. They might be a fun way to introduce animal reports or the cover page.

Also I go with my 78 year old mother to the senior hall occasionally to play games. They do coloring contests. These books I believe would be great for older people also because of the details. As the brain ages it is important to work it by reading, puzzles…etc. It helps memory. These books with the extreme detail would be good for that like a coloring puzzle. I think they look so delightful , I would have to tell and show my friends and work friends about them. I think they may have similar interests and uses.

  17. Theresa K says

    September 25, 2015 at 7:49 pm

  20. Christa Weaver says

    September 25, 2015 at 7:55 pm

  31. Margaret Szlabonyi says

    September 25, 2015 at 9:45 pm

I always love to color! It’s been one of my favorite activities since I was a child. Christmas ALWAYS included a Christmas coloring book which would last until January. Then it was onto a new one. Maybe Snow White….maybe Sleeping Beauty. Perhaps Winnie the Pooh! It didn’t matter. As long as I had a coloring book and CRAYOLA crayons, life was always good! Today, as an adult, I still love to color. But now, I may use colored pencils or markers, for a different look. Coloring takes your mind on a creative journey! My favorite places to color are my living room in front of the fireplace, and during Christmas, in front of the tree. Summertime, I like to spread a nice blanket out under my favorite tree. Life is good whenever you’re coloring!

  37. Lori Harvey says

    September 25, 2015 at 10:49 pm

My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for about a year now, and some of the hormones I have been taking have been an emotional roller coaster. I love crafting but, at times, I feel too tired or bummed to get out all of the supplies. So, now I have a couple coloring books and my colored pencils on the end table next to the sofa. Sometimes I color while watching TV and other times I color in total silence. The beauty of it is that I feel I am being creative and productive, and I’m also not sitting and worrying constantly. It has been a major

Tips for Teaching the Alphabet to Kids

If you have a little one learning their letters at home or at school, it can be helpful to know a bit about the science that goes into learning your letters and how the experts teach letter recognition.

Knowing the alphabet is the basis for learning how to read, so it’s important to get it down. Kids need to know the differences between letters, to be able to recognize their shapes and to know what sounds the letters make individually before they can start combining them in words.

Proud to Be Primary suggests starting with letters that are meaningful to the child such as the letters in their name. Tracing letters and doing letter matching and other games with letters are great ways to start kids on the road to recognizing letters. Then things like alphabet songs, books and picture cards can be added in to help with phonics and the basics of reading.

This Crafty Mom talks about using the Carnine method for teaching letter recognition, which starts with all lowercase letters and separates letters that look similar to each other (like b and d, or c and e). This makes a lot of sense because it’s not as confusing, and you can learn alphabetical order later.

How Wee Learn uses a slightly different order but the idea is the same, though she also would start with the letters in a child’s name, then go on with the rest of them. This post includes more fun games for letter recognition including digging up letters and taping letters on the floor for kids to throw paper airplanes on.

Looking for more fun ways to learn the alphabet and letter recognition? This Kaboom game from The Many Little Joys is easy to make, fun for little kids, and once you’ve used it to learn letters you can make a new version for sight words, numbers, basic math problems and more.

Early Learning Ideas has tons of letter activities including collages, crafts, tactile letter cards, letter recognition activities and much more. Do one letter a day or a week and your kiddos will know their letters in no time. And be sure to grab these cute printable alphabet books from Life Over Cs, which give kids easy activities for recognizing letters and words that begin with them.
