Learn about the Countries Affected by the American Immigration Ban

February 5, 2017 by Sarah White 14 Comments

Crafts from countries affected by the American immigration ban.

The American immigration/travel ban is up in the air right now as court battles loom, but regardless of how it ends up or how you feel about it personally, it is always a good idea to take time to learn more about other countries that are different from ours and try to understand that as people we are not all that different.

A Crafty Arab has collected resources and crafts for the banned nations, which you can do as a way to talk to your kids about the immigration ban or just to learn about these different countries.

She has at least one craft for all of the countries involved — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — and offers suggestions for books to read with your kids and for adults to read themselves about each nation.

Because she is from Libya she has a variety of recipes from that nation as well.

Check out her site for tons of crafts and learning activities around the Arab League nations and more.

As people we might not be very different…but, people who want to wipe other people off the face of the earth ARE different than me! Better to know who would like to behead you than not to know.
And, you should also know that most other countries, including the middle east, have bans on who can enter their country.
Maybe other people need to do research, hmmm?

It is NOT a Muslim Ban.

Thanks for posting the link from A Crafty Arab. I believe the world becomes a safer place when we know more about each other, rather than when we give in to fear mongering foisted on us by the ignorant and those who put their bank accounts before our safety.

Ummmm. None of the countries banned have attacked America. No country has. Homegrown citizens have been radicalized by our own fear mongering.

I am glad there are people trying to educate others about the people we are talking about as they ARE MORE LIKE US THAN NOT. Thank you for this site!

This ban would make the US the only country to ban people solely based on religion rather than nationality. Even North Korea allows some Christians to enter. Perhaps a little bit of knowledge about the commonalities we share with each other–such as craft traditions–could go a long way towards erasing ignorance. And travel bans.

Kudos to Craft Gossip for this information.

I think this is a great idea! Learning about other cultures helps them be real and no just those people way over there. It also helps reduce fear! Good job!

Great idea! There is always more that connects us than divides us. The “haters” are sadly missing the whole point. Good for you!

If learning about other cultures puts your own culture at risk, how strong is your belief in yourself? Knowledge is power for any culture. The more we know the less likely are we to fear. Thank you for these lesson plans.

What a fantastic idea. Most prejudice comes from fear of the unknown. Things like this go a long way.

What a lovely response to, what even trump is calling, the “Muslim ban”. Thank you

    Thanks so much for sharing!

We all need to come together, not be separated by hateful rhetoric!

it was a 90 day halt to new entrants, not a complete ban or forever ban. no new president just does what the last president says or did but does need time to get complete facts and do his own investigation to make a good decision. trump has done nothing that every other new president hasnt done. before you say just let every one in search out what mass uncontrolled migrants from these countries are doing in france and germany. check out dearborn, mi here in our own country…while I have no issue with the hijib I do believe the burka needs to be banned from use here it is a symbol of abuse not religious modesty, sharia law needs to be illegal to pratice , jsut as letting the pedophiles hide behind catholic doors should be illegal.

Easy Pen and Paper Games for Road Trips and Beyond

When my daughter was younger I would spend a lot of time trying to come up with activities she could do in the car on long road trips and things to entertain her when we were waiting at restaurants and things that didn’t involve screens.

But it turns out there are a lot of great activities you can do with just a piece of paper and a pen.

What Do We Do All Day has a great collection of pen and paper games, including some that can be done with just one person, though they’re all more fun if you have at least two.

There are some classics on here like hangman and dots and boxes, but there are also quite a few I hadn’t heard of before.

I don’t want to spoil the whole list for you because you should definitely click over there and look around, but I will share about the one that you see pictured above.

This game is called Bridges, and you start by making the big random shape and the dividing it into a bunch of sections (the post says 30-50 sections is ideal but I think this one is smaller than that).

Each player gets their own color marker and you take turns drawing bridges from one space to another, crossing a third. Once there’s a bridge, no other bridges can start, end or cross in those spaces. Keep going until no more bridges can be built, and the person who makes the last bridge wins.

Check out the post over at What We Do All Day for more great ideas for no or almost-no prep games you can play with your kids or that kids can play together. I’d love to know if you have a favorite paper and pen game, whether it’s on this list or a different one.
