Lego Advent Calendars – I already Hate You!

December 3, 2015 by Shellie Wilson 10 Comments

It’s only day two of the Lego Advent Calendar and I am already in ‘Hate’ with them.

Let me explain myself.

  • First, there was the drama of actually getting them. I was lucky I bought mine back in October when I read a post about the best toys for 2015. I think I obtained the last Star Wars one in my store and managed to grab a discounted 2014 Friends calendar from Mr Toys. I was actually hoping to buy non Star Wars themed Lego Calendars for both my kids but instead we ended up with this combination. I guess the Lego Friend girls can share their hot chocolate with the Stormtroopers and the kitty cat can take a spin on the Death Star.
  • Secondly, there is the Star Wars specific issue. What the heck is Day 1 of the Star Wars Calendar meant to be?

I don’t know what it is, my child doesn’t know what it is and none of my Facebook friends do either. (This equates to everyone I know)
  • Now we come to day two. Not only was it hard to put together for my 6 year old (who normally has no issues with Lego), it was hard for me too. (I always have issues with Lego though).
  • Next – What the heck is this? My son told me it was a hole cover or a Droid? Clearly he is guessing.

Please explain to me why I paid $49 for Lego Advent Calendars that comes with a single image construction manual (for each day). Why is there no explanation to what I am actually making. If I wanted to “guess” what my money was creating I would have just stuck 6 overpriced pieces of Lego into snap lock bags and called them DIY Lego creation calendar (Guess what I will be making for the kids next year).

Sorry Lego but there is a lot riding on tomorrows window.

STEAM education is vital for students because it helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. STEM education also teaches pupils how the world works and how to use that information in real-life circumstances.

One of the most significant advantages of STEAM learning is that it assists youngsters in developing critical thinking abilities. STEM learning is all about coming up with innovative answers to challenges, and this style of thinking is critical in today’s fast-paced environment.

Another advantage of STEM education is that it teaches youngsters how the world works. Children can have a better knowledge of the world around them by knowing how scientific and mathematical concepts function. This information may then be applied to real-world circumstances, such as environmental concerns or the development of a new product.
Finally, STEM learning is interesting and engaging for children. It helps them to see the world in a different way and to think about problems in new and innovative ways. This type of learning can spark a child’s curiosity and creativity, and lead to a lifelong love of learning.

OMG….I TOTALLY AGREE!! I also got the Lego Star Wars Advent because, yeah, Star Wars! But what the heck, I also don’t understand…..to the point that it’s almost not even exciting to open each window. Total disappointment. My boys are both waiting for R2 and wishing every day he’ll be in the window. Grrrrrrr.

Day 1 is Jabba’s Sail Barge, day 2 is the Sarlaac pit – both from Return of the Jedi

I didn’t like one year with the friend set, they had just a purse one day and one another day. So I stared building my own. This year my kids are building one big set each. No more little sets.

We stick with the city calendars. A search on you tube – lego advent – should help some.

The first one is Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge from episode 6. The second is the Sarlacc, also from Return of the Jewish.

Easy Pen and Paper Games for Road Trips and Beyond

When my daughter was younger I would spend a lot of time trying to come up with activities she could do in the car on long road trips and things to entertain her when we were waiting at restaurants and things that didn’t involve screens.

But it turns out there are a lot of great activities you can do with just a piece of paper and a pen.

What Do We Do All Day has a great collection of pen and paper games, including some that can be done with just one person, though they’re all more fun if you have at least two.

There are some classics on here like hangman and dots and boxes, but there are also quite a few I hadn’t heard of before.

I don’t want to spoil the whole list for you because you should definitely click over there and look around, but I will share about the one that you see pictured above.

This game is called Bridges, and you start by making the big random shape and the dividing it into a bunch of sections (the post says 30-50 sections is ideal but I think this one is smaller than that).

Each player gets their own color marker and you take turns drawing bridges from one space to another, crossing a third. Once there’s a bridge, no other bridges can start, end or cross in those spaces. Keep going until no more bridges can be built, and the person who makes the last bridge wins.

Check out the post over at What We Do All Day for more great ideas for no or almost-no prep games you can play with your kids or that kids can play together. I’d love to know if you have a favorite paper and pen game, whether it’s on this list or a different one.
