While you may prefer it when the kids are quiet, sometimes making can sound be a great learning experience. Start out by gathering together some containers (empty cans, bowls, etc), cellophane paper and extra large balloons, and rubber bands to make the drums. You will also need some drum sticks — chopsticks or the handles of wooden spoons work well. Next, you need a variety of materials to bounce on the drums. The folks at the Kids Activities Blog used rice, flowers, dried beans, and marbles but you can experiment with whatever you can find that will fit on top of the drum.
So, what does this teach kids? Not only will they learn about the different sounds different drums and bounce materials make, they will learn all about cause and effect.
