December 6, 2009 by Kristen Stephens Leave a Comment

Looking to bring the birds to your house and get your kids outside? This project might just help you do both. Craftideas.info has a great project for you and your child. This activity is perfect any time of year. Use birdseed that is on sale or buy bulk from stock suppliers.  These make great gifts for anyone who loves wildlife in their garden.

Winter food cakes for birds are a type of feed that is made from a mixture of seeds, suet, and other ingredients, and is designed to provide birds with the nutrients and energy they need to survive the cold winter months. These cakes can be hung in trees or placed on bird feeders, and are a great way to attract a variety of bird species to your yard.

There are several reasons why you should consider making winter food cakes for birds:

  1. Provide food and shelter: During the winter months, natural food sources can be scarce, and birds may have difficulty finding enough to eat. Providing food through winter food cakes can help to ensure that birds have the nutrients they need to survive and thrive.
  2. Attract a variety of birds: Winter food cakes can attract a wide variety of bird species, including finches, chickadees, nuthatches, and more. This can be a great way to add some avian interest to your yard and enjoy watching these beautiful creatures up close.
  3. Help to protect birds from predators: Providing food for birds can help to reduce the need for them to search for food elsewhere, which can help to protect them from predators.
  4. Promote conservation: Making and providing winter food cakes for birds can help to support bird populations and promote conservation efforts.

You can make your own mix of seeds that are suitable for winter.

To make a winter bird seed mix for birds in your garden, you will need:

  • A selection of seeds that are attractive to birds, such as sunflower seeds, millet, safflower seeds, and peanuts
  • Suet, which is a high-energy food that is especially attractive to birds in the winter
  • Dried fruit, such as raisins, cranberries, or chopped apples
  • A large mixing bowl
  • A spoon or spatula
  • A storage container, such as a plastic bag or airtight container

Here’s how to make your winter bird seed mix:

  1. In your mixing bowl, combine equal parts of your chosen seeds, suet, and dried fruit. You can adjust the proportions depending on your preferences and the types of birds you want to attract.
  2. Mix the ingredients together until they are well combined.
  3. Transfer the mixture to your storage container and seal it tightly.
  4. To feed the birds, simply sprinkle the seed mix on a bird feeder or scatter it on the ground in your garden.
  5. Store any leftover seed mix in your storage container in a cool, dry place until you are ready to use it again.
