Coding activities with kids can start long before they are ready to write their own programs on a computer. In fact, they don’t need to involve a computer at all.
At its most basic, coding is just a set of instructions for how to do something. This coding activity themed to the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt extends the activity and gives kids a look at how to code basic instructions as you read along.
There are pictures on the grid for different places the characters go in the book, and kids can chart out the direction and number of spaces they need to go to get to the next place.

My brother went through a phase where he was obsessed with maps. He loved to look at maps and he would draw maps of places real and imagined. He even drew maps that followed our route when we’d go to visit our grandparents in another state!
