While this isn’t something I might normally post on Lesson Plans, I just couldn’t resist the challenge that was presented to me by QVC’s Home-Savvy Hostess, Jill Bauer. I was challenged to use this Illuminated Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkin in a spooky scene for Halloween. What do you think about what I came up with?
As you can tell, I made it not-to-scary by simply dressing up each spooky element with a mustache. I know, I know — it was technically supposed to be a spooky scene, but, since this blog is aimed at kids, I didn’t want to scare them away. You must admit that these Halloween treat holders are now hard to resist, along with the spider, ghost, and illuminated pumpkin that guards them.
This Halloween scene has several elements. Front and center is the illuminated jack-o-lantern pumpkin. I sure wish I could get a picture of it that does it justice. It is a lovely ceramic pumpkin that sparkles when you turn on the LED lights in the lid because the inside is lined with glitter. We all know everything is better with glitter!
Of course, the pumpkin didn’t come with the mustache, I cut it from black felt. I attached it to the pumpkin using tacky putty. That way, if I wanted to change to scene to something else later, it was easy to remove.
The mustached mason jars (and baby food jar) were what sparked the idea for this scene. I created these easy-to-make Silly Stache Jars awhile back, and I think they fit perfectly here, filled with Halloween treats.

What do you think of the spider who is guarding the mason jars? I found this fuzzy orange arachnid for 70% off at my local craft store and I just couldn’t resist. I knew he would fit in perfect with this scene. All I needed to do was add a felt mustache. As with the jack-o-lantern, I attached the mustache using tacky putty so it can be easily removed if need be.
I initially thought the glitter-covered bowl could look like another pumpkin, but it is okay that it doesn’t. This is actually an orange flower pot. It was also on sale for 70% off because it was considered a fall decoration.
It was plain-Jane until I got my hands on it. I use a foam brush to cover the pot with Collage Pauge (or you can use Mod Podge
) and then sprinkle on a generous amount of orange glitter. Once the glitter dried I glued on large google eyes and a mustache. I think it makes a wonderful candy bowl!
Finally, I couldn’t leave the wall behind the scene unadorned. Luckily, I was able to pull another project out of the past. These glittery ghosts make a wonderful finishing touch, Don’t you think so?

I had a lot of fun coming up with this Halloween scene for the DIY Halloween Challenge from QVC. This is my second project I made as part of a QVC challenge, the first one was a Back-to-School challenge and I made these Mason Jar Tumbler Teacher’s Gifts.
